USDA Forest Service - Development of Forest Disturbance Scenarios for the United States
IMPORTANCE
This study is an important part of the Resource Planning Act (RPA) Assessment that is periodically conducted by the Forest Service, and will address the issue of forest contribution to the global carbon cycle (RPA Criteria 5). The development of spatially explicit disturbance histories will improve the linkage between ecological models and timber policy models used in the RPA climate change assessment. The application of the ecological models will facilitate the determination of temporal and spatial patterns of carbon storage and, when linked to timber policy models, address the efficacy of mitigation measures. This work will continue to offer the Forest Service a modeling capability to analyze the impact of land use and climate change on carbon storage.
